REST IN HIM

They spoke to the LORD’S angel, who was standing among the myrtle trees. They said, “We have gone through all the earth, and everything is calm and quiet.”

ZECHARIAH 1:11 NCV

What prompts that vague feeling that somehow we’re getting behind everyone else? This sensation hits us every morning when we first flick on our phone, the radio, or TV. We’re hungry for news! What’s going on in the world, and what should our response be? Should we be doing more, getting more involved somehow?

The challenge to accomplish bigger and better things also hits us at a professional level. Are we living up to our potential? With all that schooling behind us and the expenses looming ahead, are we doing everything possible to succeed? Making the most of our opportunities? When we’re at work we often feel pressured to attend more meetings, take on more responsibilities, and do more with less, as the saying goes. If we don’t, we’re accused of slacking off. Even in our personal lives we can feel the pressure to exercise more, read more, and travel more. More, more, more.

All of our activities may seem to give us a sense of value and worth. If we keep busy enough, perhaps we’ll be able to overlook the emptiness within. This may be why we constantly push to excel, to be on top. Such endless activity prevents us from having to handle difficult questions or think through tough issues.

Maybe we need to give it a rest sometimes. Just push the pause button. Turn off our revving thoughts and simply read the Word and pray. Let’s stop whirling around at the crazy pace the world demands. Just rest in Him once in a while. We can do it but only if we’re willing to take a breather. Let’s wait on Him rather than rushing to meet our own self-imposed deadlines.

Lord, please help me know when You’re calling me to peace and quiet. Sometimes it takes illness to slow me down. Help me to rest in You, pray, and be more in tune to what’s best for me and my spiritual health. Amen.
